When I was playing college basketball, my coach Rich Panella would watch film with me. He’d take a 5 minute clip and tell me several skills to work on:
- Positioning on defense
- Moving tighter off screens
- Finding shots within our plays
- Catching the ball ready to shoot
I was amazed at what he saw in a short game clip. These sessions taught me two important lessons:
1. Details matter
2. Always be learning
Basketball is a game of possessions. When you execute the details better than your competition, you win more.
That’s why training is important for players. Great athletes didn’t become great overnight. They put in the work over a long period of time with extreme focus on the details.
My coach inspired me during those sessions. He not only taught me valuable lessons, but encouraged me to find ways to get better.
This is the kind of impact I hope to have on my athletes. The impact my coach had on me.
